Teaching Style

Courtney provides a relaxed and fun environment in which students learn and thrive. He guides his students in building a foundation upon which they can expand. He is well versed in teaching all genres of music and encourages students to explore and discover what most excites and inspires them. He pays close attention to each student's learning style and customizes his teaching method accordingly to assist them in reaching their musical potential.  

Teaching Experience

Courtney has been teaching students, in schools and privately, for many years. His students range in age from 9 to over 70.

After graduating from Musicians Institute, Courtney taught guitar at the preparatory summer program for the Institute. Since moving to New York in the mid 1980's, he has taught at several schools and numerous private students at all levels.  He taught for five years at the Rockland Conservatory of Music in Spring Valley, NY and was Adjunct Guitar Instructor for two and a half years at New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, Department of Music & Performing Arts Professions. He also taught at the Crestwood Music Education Center in Eastchester, NY and was guitar instructor for four years at the Goucher College Summer Arts Institute Jazz Program in Towson, MD, where he also led jazz ensembles, and taught jazz improv classes and jazz history.

Currently he is Guitar Instructor at Newark Academy in Livingston, NJ, home of the nationally recognized and award winning jazz big band Chameleon.

Courtney teaches private students at his home in Maplewood, NJ and is currently accepting new students.
